According to PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) the "breast is the best." Last week Peta sent a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, better known as BEN AND JERRY of the famous natural ice cream. The letter asked the two to use human breast milk in the making of their frozen treats rather than cow's milk. The switch to the breast, according to PETA, would lessen the suffering of cows and their young and be better for human health. Why should people be drinking what is meant for baby cows when they can be consuming what is meant for their own young, not animal young?
PETA may have a point, and a restaurant owner in Switzerland may already be two steps ahead of PETA vowing to purchase mommy's breast milk to use in at least 75 percent of the restaurant's food.
Being a vegan myself I get where PETA is coming from, personally I'm good sticking with soy and almond milk. There is no doubt that breast milk benefits babies and could adults as well, but what if it came down to the improper use of having babies just to produce milk to sell to big companies? When the need and dependence for a living being's natural resource becomes so great and in demand it is never a good thing and it can always be abused in some way. So why start down that road. Don't add another living being's milk to the problem. Choose something else.
How about soy Ben and Jerry?

I think that it is an outrageous stunt on PETA’s part to even suggest the use of human breast milk, for ice cream. To me, this would be an exploitation of a woman’s body. Selling any part of a woman, including her breast milk, is synonymous to prostitution. Also, as you have pointed out, there are other alternatives to milk that comes from a cow, such as soymilk.
Further more, there are many health risks in using human breast milk, as unscreened milk can transmit diseases, such as HIV. In addition, according to the CDC’s website, Hepatitis C and Hepatitis C-Related Chronic Disease can be transmitted through breast milk, as well as Hepatitis B. I am sure the list of diseases and other toxins transmittable goes on.
To me, this seems to be more trouble than it is worth.
Finally, PETA is supposed to be protecting animals, well bottom-line, human beings are animals as well, so maybe PETA should be more concerned with protecting our species and giving human beings fair representation in its outcry of injustices.
Gross.
That is all.
I agree with both comments, and I would like to emphasize how awful this idea of having breast milk ice cream truly is. As I read through the other comments on the blog Kerry linked, I stumbled upon the most shocking comment I have seen in a while that was blatantly offensive. A blogger wrote in support of the new idea of using breast feeding as a tactic to pick up men.
She described a "Demo Idea" in which booths would be set up to promote breast milk across the country. The blogger said, "I'm thinking booths where voluptuously well endowed vegan women wearing tiny tight tees (tease!!!), willingly showing...giving the male passers by a shot of their "freshly squeezed" concoction!!" This comment utterly repulsed me and I am now nauseous over this idea.
This comment not only repulsed me, but more so outraged me that a women would blog a comment like this about her own gender. The function of woman's body to breast feed is specifically created in order to feed and grow a healthy baby. The commment was disrespecful and absolutely dehumanizing.
In response to the blog Amanda found, Dr. Matrin is right about "the crazies" coming out and leaving stupid posts. I also don't agree with PETA's suggestion to Ben and Jerry's and I never even thought about the health risks Caroline brought up. When I was talking about this topic with a friend, she said, "What's next? Using human eggs instead of a chicken's?"
I actually saw on a food blog (I know I'm a nerd) that there was a chef in Switzerland who was using breast milk in some of his recipes. He offered 10 euros per liter of milk, which comes down to $13.64 in American dollars. I guess that he is in a bit of trouble but authorities aren't sure how to handle the case since there are no laws pertaining to the use of breast milk. Yummm...
WOW.....
I don't even know what to say about that. Breast milk? really?
I feel that by allowing this we will only create more problems such as mothers making babies just to have milk and sell it, diseases that may somehow find its way into the milk, the issue of a woman selling a part of her body, and most of all I cannot imagine our society finding that to be too appealing
It's come to a point where I see PETA and react with the same respect and consideration that I would give for members of say, NAMBLA. Maybe the KKK.
This is just another example of them pushing their beliefs on people. The entire organization is more or less for lack of a better term, attention whores. They couldn't think of anything legitimate to say or do to get in the news, so they stoop to this.
